At New English Secondary School in Sion, a group of enterprising young minds—Saharsh Jadhav, Vighnesh Badgu, Anmol Revar, Chirantan Rane, Soham Shigvan, and Kartik Mayekar—set out to address a problem that has long plagued schoolchildren everywhere. The weight of school bags is a common complaint among students, causing severe strain on their backs and shoulders. Carrying heavy loads of books daily leads to physical discomfort and long-term posture issues. Yet, despite its prevalence, this problem remains largely unaddressed at schools. These students, however, were determined to find a solution to this persistent problem.
The concept took shape from a keen realisation: the means of carrying books to school is rather tough on the shoulders.. They envisioned a product that would not only lighten the physical burden on students but also improve their overall school experience. Through brainstorming and discussions amongst themselves and with feedback from other students, they identified an innovative approach—combining a school bag with a portable desk. This hybrid bag and desk was christened - ‘Easy Bag’, and their team,’ Knight Warriors.’
Drawing inspiration from the cabin baggage trolley, they conceptualised a pull-along desk on wheels. Unlike traditional backpacks, which place the entire weight of books on the students’ backs, this design allowed them to roll their materials effortlessly. The team incorporated a 3D-printed handle for an ergonomic grip, ensuring ease of movement across various terrains. The desk itself featured a flap that opened to reveal a spacious storage compartment for books, along with a secret compartment to store valuable or personal items securely. A part of it doubled up as a writing pad, offering a sturdy surface for jotting down notes anytime, anywhere. IInside, partitions helped keep belongings organised, ensuring that even large files and drawing books fit neatly without getting crumpled. To add to its convenience, the bag also included a dedicated sharpener waste box, preventing pencil shavings from creating a mess. Additionally, they integrated a dedicated space along the handles to carry a tiffin box, allowing for an even more convenient commute.
Their design thinking extended beyond mere utility; they sought to create something that was not just functional but also visually appealing. Using MDF (medium-density fibreboard) for durability, they constructed the prototype and painted it in bright, cheerful colours. The result was a school bag that was no longer just a means of transporting books—it was a mobile study station, a personal space that could transform any environment into a classroom.
What made Easy Bag even more remarkable was its potential beyond conventional schooling. In areas where proper classroom infrastructure was lacking, the portable desk could serve as a much-needed solution for students who otherwise struggled with uncomfortable seating arrangements.
However, reaching the final design had its own challenges. The students did multiple iterations. Initially, their problem statement led them to consider various solutions, including reducing book load through digital learning or rethinking the ergonomics of traditional backpacks. But as they continued to explore different ideas, a recurring theme emerged—students not only carried heavy bags but also lacked adequate space to sit and work comfortably. This realisation prompted them to merge these two issues into a single, holistic solution.
Easy Bag is a brilliant example of how young minds, when given the freedom to explore and experiment, can develop solutions that have a lasting impact. It redefines the way students carry and use their school materials, making everyday learning more comfortable and efficient. In addressing a problem that affects countless students, these young innovators have not only lightened their own loads but have also paved the way for future generations to benefit from their ingenuity. Their journey serves as an inspiration to others, proving that the simplest ideas—when executed with passion and perseverance—can change the world in unexpected ways.
